The siren wailed as Lily put her apartment on lockdown as she had done this time of year every year for what felt like forever. She had lost countless friends and family members to The Merge. It wasn’t their fault though, most merging was done forcibly by another with the person who lay hands on the other first becoming the dominant personality.

However no one could rival the infamous Merging Mistress Meredith.

Rumors had it that Meredith had merged with over 50 people since the merge bagan. This gave her amazing strength, beauty and intelligence but had also been driven completely evil with her hunger to add more bodies to herself. During the rest of the year Meredith continued to amass a criminal empire and the most feared people in the city. It helped that she had absorbed all the other criminal heads and now controlled all their territories.

It was also rumored that she had something that protected herself from being absorbed by anyone which would explain how why she roamed the streets on Merge day looking for her next meal. Lily knew all of this because she and Meredith were once best friends.

Back when they were friends Meredith went by Mary. They had grown up together and were inseparable throughout college. They did everything together. They were even going to get matching tattoos once but Lily chickened out when she watched Mary get hers.

Even though Mary was more of a wild child compared to Lily’s conservative nature, nothing could split them apart. It all changed when in their senior year the Merge began. Meredith and Lily were trying get back to the safety of their dorm when they confronted by Judith, the blonde haired head of the Alpha Sorority.

“Well if it isn’t the nerd twins far from home. Three hours into the Merge Lily suddenly heard a banging on her metal shutters. She looked at her security cameras and saw they were all static. 

“Shit!” She exclaimed. How could she not notice the cameras going down. Then she heard a voice that made her blood run cold.

“Liiiiiiiiiillllllllllllllllyyyyyyyyy.” Meredith said in a calm sinister tone. Lily picked up a shotgun she had hidden away and aimed it at the shutter where Meredith’s evil voice was trickling in from. Murder was still murder but she would be damned if she let that evil bitch take her.

Suddenly the metal shutter, along with the door, was ripped clean off its frame as if it was tissue paper. Lily could hear the slow click clack of high heel shoes approach the door and before she knew it Meredith was standing in her threshold. She looked different than the last time she saw her. Beautiful for sure but somehow younger, elegant and a unmistakably powerful presence. She exuded evil from her pores and had a look that could kill. Lily aimed the gun shakily at her.

“Blondes are always the more easily tricked victims. Oh little innocent Lily do you even know how to use that?” Meredith said condescendingly looking at Lily shake with the shotgun.

“If you take another step forward you’ll find out.” Lily said shaking even more.

“Oh you’ve got spunk, I’ll enjoy adding you to my collection.” Meredith said licking her lips as she took another step forward. This was all Lily needed as she offloaded two shells right at Meredith. For her part Meredith didn’t even blink as the bullets hit her body and crumbled to the floor. Meredith looked at the smashed bullets on the ground and laughed.

“That’s the benefit of absorbing so many people, all you did was kill one of my victims. That right there was just a professional chef you murdered. Because of that I won’t be able to make that soup I like anymore. Shame.” Meredith said playing with her hair as she advanced slowly on Lily.

“Stop! Why are you here? I thought I was too pathetic to take?” Lily said throwing the useless shotgun aside as she backed towards the corner.

“Call me sentimental but I missed you. That and you are now the only loose thread connected to my previous life as Mary. I’m just cleaning up.” She said smiling an evil grin as she got even closer to Lily with an outstretched hand..

“But don’t worry you’ll enjoy being part of me. I am the most powerful person in the entire world after all. I am a Goddess and you get to be part of that, you should be thanking me.” Meredith said cackling as she put her hands on Lily’s skin. She waited for the telltale feeling of the merging to wash over her but after a few moments it didn’t happen. Meredith spotted a dark line poking out from under Lily’s sleeve. She raised the sleeve and with horror recoiled at the familiar tattoo. She quickly let go and backed away.

“No no no no no this can’t be.” Meredith said now in fear as Lily broke from her trance.

“What? The tattoo? I know I chickened out that day we were suppose to get it but when I lost you to Judith I got it as a reminder of who you used to be.” Lily said confused at the fear now in Meredith’s eyes

“You stupid bitch! How do you think I have survived all these years without being absorbed? The tattoo has magical protection tied to it. Years of merging however has made it less effective.” Meredith said lifting up her skirt to show the very faded tattoo on her thigh. 

“This wouldn’t be a problem with anyone else but your tattoo is newer, stronger!” Meredith said trying to flee but was being pulled towards Lily who couldn’t move. She too tried to run but some other worldly force was keeping her rooted in one spot. Meredith was clinging on tight to the floorboards with her long nails but it was no good as she slammed into Lily and a bright light filled the room.

Lily was absorbing Meredith into her body and it was bringing about many changes both physically and mentally. Her skin stretched and bones creaked as she took on Meredith’s more athletic sexy form. Her hair turned dirty blonde and her face transformed from it’s once welcoming demeanour to one of pure superiority and beauty.

You are just one of my legion now!” Lily said cackling madly as the changes accelerated.
